Listen this Wednesday at 8PM as your Music Biz 101 & More radio show interviews Jake Ottman, VP of A&R for Warner/Chappell, one of the biggest music publishers in the world. Did you know that A&R isn’t just at a record label? Did you know that, if you work really, really hard and are really, really passionate, you can find your space in the biz?
Send us a tweet and we may ask your question.
Meanwhile, there’s a big fight between BMI and the Dept. of Justice. In related publishing news, Don Henley, Eagles co-founder, bashed the U.S. Copyright Office. And during the last Super Bowl, your digital device gave away how much, or how little, attention you were paying to the game. Or to Beyonce’s halftime show.
Oh, there’s also this:
Not just because we ran it.
Find someone who went, a panelist, a member of Palisades, one of the attendees at the networking tables. Hands down, they said they got something positive out of this event. It was like a giant Hershey’s Kiss was hugging us all night long.
Go to this next year. It’ll still be free. And it’ll still be awesome.

Why Real A&R Requires Far More Than Online Metrics And YouTube
Leading up to our Wednesday interview with Warner/Chappell’s Jake Ottman, read this interesting interview with a well-respected publishing executive. A key quote:
“In music publishing in particular, it’s impossible to reduce the craft of A&R to a game of tracking metrics, because it’s crucial that we understand how a songwriter works behind closed doors, not just how well they reach a faraway following.”
Songkick Gets A Shazam Integration
You probably know about Shazam, the amazing music discovery app (I think it’s better than Apple’s Siri, by far) that can ‘hear’ a song and give you the title, lyrics, artist, album, and give you a link to purchase it.
Shazam is going to work with ticketing and concert discovery platform Songkick to help fans find out more about when and where the artist they just tagged on Shazam is touring.
Will Shazam provide a link to buy tickets? You would think, although the article doesn’t say.
Would Shazam earn a piece of that revenue? You would think, although the article doesn’t say.
That said (ha!), it’s still worth a read. So click.

Click to read about how they’re doing it (hint: raising ticket prices has a lot to do with it).
