“Telephone” is a song by American singer Lady Gaga from her third EP, The Fame Monster (2009)—a reissue of her debut studio album, The Fame (2008). The song features American singer Beyoncé. The song was written by Gaga, Rodney Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Lazonate Franklin and Beyoncé.
Inspired by her fear of suffocation, Gaga explained that the lyrics would rather chill on the dance floor than answer her lover’s phone calls is a metaphor, her phone calls representing the fear of not working hard enough to succeed. With a song that replaces their fifth single from The Fame, “Paparazzi”, the duet also embodies a fear of being strangled and framed by the media.
Initially, Gaga wrote songs for Britney Spears who recorded demos. Musically, “Telephone” consists of an extended bridge, a rap verse, and a sampled voice from the operator announcing that the telephone line is unreachable. Beyoncé appears in the middle of the song, belting out the verse quickly, accompanied by a double beat.
The song received positive reviews from critics who often cited “Telephone” as a standout track from The Fame Monster. It was a Grammy nominee for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2011. “Telephone” charted in a number of countries due to digital sales after the album’s release, namely in the United States, Australia, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and Hungary. .
The song was very successful in Europe where it reached the top of the charts in Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the single sold 7.4 million digital copies worldwide in 2010 alone, making it one of Gaga’s best-selling singles.
The accompanying music video is a continuation of the video for her 2009 song, “Paparazzi”, and was also shot as a short film. After Gaga was released from prison by Beyoncé, they went to a restaurant and poisoned guests who were having breakfast. After the murder they escape and end up in a high speed police chase. Quentin Tarantino’s video references and his films Pulp Fiction (1994) and Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003).
The video received generally positive reviews and was nominated for three awards at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, including one for Video of the Year. In January 2015 Billboard named it the best video of the first half of the decade. In memory of Alexander McQueen, Gaga performed the acoustic song “Telephone” mixed with “Dance in the Dark” at the 2010 BRIT Awards. It was also performed during the Super Bowl LI halftime show, and the singer’s many concert tours.

[Lady Gaga:]
Hello, hello, baby, you called? I can’t hear a thing
I have got no service in the club, you say, say? (Say)
Wha-wha-what did you say, huh? You’re breaking up on me
Sorry, I cannot hear you, I’m kinda busy (I’m kinda busy)
K-kinda busy (I’m kinda busy), k-kinda busy (I’m kinda busy)
Sorry, I cannot hear you, I’m kinda busy
Just a second, it’s my favorite song they’re gonna play (Play)
And I cannot text you with a drink in my hand, eh
You should’ve made some plans with me, you knew that I was free
And now you won’t stop calling me, I’m kind of busy
Stop callin’, stop callin’, I don’t wanna think anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
Stop callin’, stop callin’, I don’t wanna talk anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh
Stop telephoning me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh (Stop telephoning me)
I’m busy!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh (I’m busy)
Stop telephoning me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh (Stop telephoning me)
Can call all you want but there’s no one home
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone (No)
‘Cause I’m out in the club and I’m sipping that bubb
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone (No)
Can call all you want but there’s no one home
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone
‘Cause I’m out in the club and I’m sipping that bubb
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone
[Beyoncé:]
Boy, the way you blowing up my phone
Won’t make me leave no faster
Put my coat on faster, leave my girls no faster
I should’ve left my phone at home ’cause this is a disaster
Callin’ like a collector
Sorry, I cannot answer
[Lady Gaga & Beyoncé:]
It’s not that I don’t like you, I’m just at a party
And I am sick and tired of my phone r-ringing
Sometimes I feel like I live in Grand Central S-Station (Station)
Tonight I’m not taking no calls ’cause I’ll be dancing
(‘Cause tonight I’m dancing) ‘Cause I’ll be dancing
(‘Cause tonight I’m dancing) ‘Cause I’ll be dancing
(Tonight I’m dancing)
Tonight I’m not taking no calls, ’cause I’ll be dancing
[Lady Gaga:]
Stop calling, stop calling, I don’t wanna think anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
Stop calling, stop calling, I don’t wanna talk anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
Stop calling, stop calling, I don’t wanna think anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
Stop calling, stop calling, I don’t wanna talk anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dance floor
