“Lover” is a song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, taken from her seventh studio album of the same name (2019). Aiming to create a timeless love song, Swift wrote songs about an intimate and committed relationship.
The way the newlyweds adjust their wedding vows inspired the bridge, which references the bridal rhyme “Something Old”. Co-produced by Jack Antonoff, the song combines country and indie music with a waltz tempo. It features an acoustic-guitar-driven, retro-influenced ballad production consisting of a snare drum, piano, pizzicato strings, and echo-filled vocals.
Republic Records released “Lover” for digital download and streaming on August 16, 2019; the song became the album’s third radio single the following month. Swift and Drew Kirsch directed the music video, which was released on August 22 and follows a couple living inside a dollhouse in a snow globe.
Three alternate versions of “Lover” were released—a duet remix featuring Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, an orchestral remix based on Swift’s performance at the 2019 American Music Awards subtitled “First Dance Remix”, and a live version recorded at Swift’s Lover City 2019 concert.
Music critics praised “Lover” for its emotionally catchy lyrics and romantic production; many appreciated the production reminiscent of Swift’s early albums. Publications including Billboard, Complex, and Pitchfork featured the song on their 2019 end-of-year lists.
It was Swift’s first solo song to be nominated for Song of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards, and the video received two MTV Video Music Award nominations. The single peaked within the top 10 in Australia, Canada, the United States, Ireland, Lebanon, New Zealand and Singapore, and received multi-platinum certification in the first three countries.

Lyrics Lover – Taylor Swift
–
We could leave the Christmas lights up ’til January
This is our place, we make the rules
And there’s a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you, dear
Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years?
Can I go where you go?
Can we always be this close forever and ever?
And ah, take me out and take me home
You’re my, my, my, my
Lover
We could let our friends crash in the living room
This is our place, we make the call
And I’m highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you
I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, but I want ’em all
Can I go where you go?
Can we always be this close forever and ever?
And ah, take me out and take me home (Forever and ever)
You’re my, my, my, my
Lover
Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?
With every guitar string scar on my hand
I take this magnetic force of a man to be my
Lover
My heart’s been borrowed and yours has been blue
All’s well that ends well to end up with you
Swear to be over-dramatic and true to my
Lover
And you’ll save all your dirtiest jokes for me
And at every table, I’ll save you a seat
Lover
Can I go where you go?
Can we always be this close forever and ever?
And ah, take me out and take me home (Forever and ever)
You’re my, my, my, my
Oh, you’re my, my, my, my
Darling, you’re my, my, my, my
Lover
