The William Paterson University Music Management Seminar Series has been running since the 1980s. Featuring heavy hitting guests from the music & entertainment industry, the series runs each spring with video, a live audience, and full audio/video production.
Guests have ranged from LA Reid (not available for video; he never signed the release) to Atlantic Records COO Julie Greenwald. Former Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg has spoken, as has Joan Jett manager Kenny Laguna and scores of other agents, label execs, promoters, authors, and tech folks.
The headline above says “Ever.” It’s a lie. Back in the ’80s, when the Music Management Seminar Series started, it took place on Fridays, sometimes in a classroom, sometimes in a hidden room on campus never to be set foot in again by the participants. Dr. Esteban (you may know him as Steve) Marcone, who has run the WPU Music Biz since 1984ish, booked the early guests and led the interviews.
I, the author of this thing, got an internship out of one interview, which was held with Jim Caparro, then the VP of National Sales for PolyGram. That was in spring of 1989. I recall an interview with Dave Marsh, who’d written books about Bruce Springsteen, including a favorite book of mine from back then called Born To Run.
Another early memorable interview, which only exists in my brain, was also from the 1980s, this one conducted in the school library. The interview was with Steve Leeds, who at the time worked for fledgling video channel, U-68.
At some point, Leeds became the host of the Music Management Series. The interviews became more of a serious production, and the William Paterson Music Management program (now called the Music & Entertainment Industries program) started capturing them on video.
Want to see them? You can. The playlist below has ’em all. Watch. Learn. Enjoy. This is great stuff.
