“Animals” is a song by the American pop rock band Maroon 5. It was released on August 25, 2014, as the second single from the band’s fifth studio album V (2014). The song was written by Adam Levine, Benny Blanco and producer Shellback. The song peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 giving Maroon 5 their tenth top 10 single in the US.
The music video was heavily criticized by critics and condemned for being inhumane and glorifying violence. Jessica Valenti of The Guardian criticized the video for trying to make violence against women seem “inconvenient” stating that “there is no ‘alternative’ to showing women being followed, hunted, raped or killed because it is something that happens every day.” RAINN (National Rape, Abuse & Incest Network) released a statement condemning the video, writing that “No one should confuse the crime of stalking with romance. The trivialization of this serious crime, like stalking, should have no place in the entertainment industry.”
In a 2018 interview with The Independent, Levine brushed off the criticism, calling it “so ridiculous”, and saying of the video, “That should be creepy! I played the role of a ruffian, that’s really a character from a movie. And the song is about animalistic tendencies. ., I’m talking about eating someone alive. Use your damn imagination. It’s like watching a horror movie and telling the people who made it to tell them you think they are disgusting. Sometimes people are so rooted in reality too and they can’t tell the difference. They take everything too personal.”
