Learning, Networking & Recording Music Biz 101 & More Podcasts On Tap

New Jersey – This weekend, twenty William Paterson University Music Management majors and minors will fly out from their home bases and descend on Nashville, Tennessee for the 2016 Music Biz conference/convention.  The trip, sponsored in part by a MEIEA grant and two sponsors, White Hat Management/Van Duyne, Bruno, & Co. and Vay Wealth Management, will be led by WP professors Dr. Stephen “Steve” Marcone and David Kirk “David Kirk” Philp.

There are various purposes for the trip.  Students will gain experience in networking, selling ideas, researching, interviewing, editing, and marketing.  The Music Biz 101 & More radio show/podcast, hosted by Marcone and Philp, will have an additional 20 original shows produced by WP students.

Every Wednesday at 8PM, your Music Biz 101 & More radio show interviews personnel from the music and entertainment business. Guests have included industry legends like manager Doc McGee (KISS, Bon Jovi) and concert promoter John Scher.  In addition, interviews have been conducted with label presidents, heads of marketing, CEOs, data experts, and more.

Before leaving for Nashville, students (both undergraduate and graduate) completed four preparation classes in which they learned about how to make pitches (hint: it’s not about you), how to find contact information on targets, how to stay organized, how to “tie down” someone who has said yes (admit it, you’ve said yes to something, slept on it, and awakened the next morning thinking no), and how to research individuals in advance of an interview.

Upon returning from Nashville, students will use free Audacity editing software in order to finalize their interviews and turn them into 55-minute radio shows and podcasts.  The students will also market their shows through blog posts and social media platforms.
